Just come back from a weeks racing at the HiHo event in the British Virgin
Islands.
Unfortunately because of the credit crunch there were only 25 competitiors
this year compared to last years 40 odd. This didn't matter too much as it
made it a bit more personal.
Picking up my kit the day before the competition was like all my
christmases coming at once! Picking up brand new Neilpryde 9m, 7.5m V8s
and 6.2 Hellcat from a large shipping container full of Kit.
First days sailing I played it a little too cautious and went for my 7.5
and came in 15th in both races that day.
The next day was the classic 14mile blast to Anegada which I opted for my
9m and 51cm upright fin in around 18knts of wind, and managed to come in
9th after 40mins of non stop blasting with the odd flying fish to keep me
company!
Third days racing was a downwind race in the lee of Virgin Gorda so the
conditions were gusty to say the least but still managed a ninth another
place on the 9m.
Fourht days racing was probably the hardest for me it was a 23 mile slalom
course down the Sir Francis Drake Channel. At the start of the race it was
blowinf around 13nkts but by the end of the race it was blowing a near
constant 20knts and I was holding on for dear life in 5ft seas, and this
was the 3rd time I had ever used a 9.0m sail. Just finishing felt great
with nearly half the fleet dropping out. That day I managed to get 11th
place.
After 6 days of racing I managed to get 11th overall and 3rd in the mens
fleet.
It was the most amazing windsurfing week I have ever had and the parties at
night were pretty crazy too! I cant wait to next years event. Also it is 25
years of the Hiho so should be a big event.
